With 2021 just around the corner, many of us are starting to brainstorm over our New Year’s resolutions for the coming year. Seen as a fresh start from the, shall we say, interesting year of 2020, 2021 allows us to reach for new goals and dreams with a clean slate. But, as you think up your New Year’s resolution list, it might look similar to the one you wrote at the start of this year – and maybe the year before that. We can’t look back at 2020 and what we would like to improve for 2021 without nodding to the elephant in the room: health. If there’s anything this year has taught us, it’s that our health is most certainly our wealth. So what are some good New Year’s resolutions to ensure you have a healthy 2021?

1. Focus on exercises that you actually enjoy

You know it’s the start of the new year when you walk into your gym and see it flooded with more people than usual. January is the busiest month for gyms and fitness equipment stores as people make an oath to finally workout. It usually takes a month or even less for the true gymgoers to reveal themselves, while the resolutioners go back to, well, whatever they go back to.

One of the biggest reasons that people don’t stick to their workout regimen is that they don’t even enjoy the exercises they’re doing. There are so many ways to work out and get fit, you just have to find the one that motivates you.

2. Examine the way you self-medicate

Whether your vice is alcohol, tobacco, or medications your doctor didn’t prescribe, take a long hard look at the way you self-medicate. A popular New Year’s resolution is Dry January, which is when people give up alcohol for the entire month and often realize how dependent they were on it. If you stick through the entire month, you’ll likely see shifts in your thinking, how you choose to spend your time, and who you want to spend it with. Whether you commit to Dry January or not, examining the way you self-medicate and making adjustments can be the clean start you’re looking for – pun intended.

3. Reduce social media clutter

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and one thing that impacts our state of mental health that we have control over is our social media intake. Many of us fail to remember that our social media feeds are customizable. That means we can follow and unfollow whoever we like, and purge without explanation. Whether you want to use your social media feed for inspiration, connecting with friends, or marketing, make a conscious effort to do it mindfully by eliminating the clutter and watch how things shift with your focus.

4. Be more mindful about food

On the New Year’s resolution list of someone, somewhere is go on a diet or lose some weight. It’s about time we change all that. While diet culture has had its years, its negative impact on mental and physical health clearly shows that it’s not healthy, or sustainable. Let’s make 2021 the year of healthy relationships towards food.

Focus on being mindful of how you prepare your food, where your produce comes from, and how you eat it to develop a healthy and intuitive relationship with food. While it might feel strange at first, it won’t take long for you to be more mindful about what you consume. Before you know it, you’ll be more mindful of other things as well.

5. Make self-care a priority

Self-care is becoming incredibly important, and downright necessary, in our hectic world. The beautiful thing about self-care is that anyone can benefit from it. And with benefits such as improved immunity, increased positive thinking, and reduced susceptibility to stress and other emotional health issues, who wouldn’t want to master it? Set aside some time every day to put yourself first, whether that’s by meditating for ten minutes, doing yoga for thirty, or putting your phone on airplane mode an hour before you go to bed.

6. Spend more time in nature

Studies remind us time and time again of the importance of spending time in nature. The connection between time spent outdoors and our overall health cannot be denied. Just take a walk in a park or a forest and you’re bound to notice the positive effects. According to research, nature can help with many health-related issues and enhance creativity, self-esteem, and overall mood. No matter how you look at it, spending time in nature is good for the body and mind.
